Custom 22m Houseboat Build – South Australia

Project Overview

Baldwin Boats was proud to work alongside our customer on his first-ever houseboat build — a custom 22-metre, single-storey, 2x bedroom, side-living vessel designed for long-term enjoyment on South Australian waters and, eventually, life as the owner’s retirement home.

From the initial pontoons through to propulsion, helm systems and onboard equipment, our team completed a substantial part of the vessel’s structural fabrication and marine fit-out, working closely with other local trades to bring the project together.

Baldwin Boats Scope of Works

  • Custom aluminium pontoons – designed and fabricated in-house to form the foundation of the vessel.
  • Aluminium floor structure & deck – creating the main structural platform for the complete houseboat.
  • Internal aluminium wall frames – custom fabricated to form the vessel’s internal layout and support the fit-out.
  • Aluminium handrails & gates – manufactured and fitted in-house.
  • Custom aluminium fuel tanks – fabricated in-house for both the petrol and diesel systems.
  • Coolroom panel roof – constructed using lightweight insulated panels and fibreglassed in-house for durability and weather protection.
  • Front helm fit-out – installation and fit-off of controls and switching for navigation lights, horn, spotlights and other onboard systems.
  • Twin Mercury 60hp EXLPT CT outboards – supplied, installed and rigged, including the vessel’s steering system.
  • Mercury VesselView 9″ display – installed at the helm for integrated engine and vessel information.
  • Forward-facing sounder – supplied and installed to provide additional visibility beneath and ahead of the vessel.
  • 5kVA Fischer Panda generator – installed to provide onboard power generation.
  • Tank monitoring systems – wiring and connection of senders for petrol, diesel, blackwater and other onboard tank systems.
  • Planus electric toilets – supplied as part of the vessel’s onboard amenities.
  • Ongoing technical support and project collaboration throughout the construction and fit-out process.

A Collaborative Build

A project of this scale is very much a team effort. Baldwin Boats worked closely with Paul from PRW Elite Contracting, who completed the vessel’s interior fit-out, alongside Zig from Zigz Plumbing and the team from Adams & Slatter Electrical.

Bringing together specialist local trades allowed each stage of the vessel to be completed by people experienced in their respective fields, while working towards the same end result.

This build showcases the diversity of work undertaken at Baldwin Boats — from aluminium pontoon construction and structural fabrication through to custom fuel tanks, fibreglassing, propulsion, steering, electronics and marine systems integration.

Once complete, the vessel will make its way to South Australia, where it has been built to provide years of enjoyment on the water before eventually becoming the owner’s retirement home.

A fantastic custom project built through collaboration, practical design and quality workmanship — and one we’re proud to have played such a significant role in bringing to life.
